Mr. Cheshire was born at the Homestead, Willoughby Beach, Norfolk, on Sept. 28, 1931. He was the son of the late Charles Consolvo and Mary Alice Brownley Cheshire, and he was predeceased by his brother, Charles C. Cheshire Jr. Ned was a graduate of Granby High School and played on the 1949 football team that reached the Orange Bowl Championships, and also played on their State Champion basketball team. He later went on to attend the Norfolk Division of William and Mary and became a graduate of the University of Houston. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He served on the staff for the Chief of Naval Air Training, or CNATRA, in Corpus Christi for over 30 years, where he received many decorations, including the Outstanding Civil Service Employee for NAS, Corpus Christi, and the Secretary of Navy Command Ashore Safety Award for Outstanding Command in the U.S. Navy in 1987. He was the chairman of the board of directors of the Navy Army Federal Credit Union and was the Health and Safety Manager for the Chief of Naval Air Training. He was also a founding member of the Island Presbyterian Church in Corpus Christi. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Pharo Henley Cheshire of Corpus Christi, Texas; his daughters, Vivian Lee Cheshire and Carol Ann Cheshire Phelan of Corpus Christi; his son, Stewart Clay Cheshire of Brownsville, Texas; his sister, Mary Virginia "Sis" Cheshire Dean Vincke of Newport News; a grandchild, Jessica Lee Phelan of Corpus Christi; stepchildren, Douglas Henley Jr. and Elizabeth Henley Absher of Virginia Beach, and Anne Henley Eberdt of Durham, N.C.; step- grandchildren, Matt and Libi Henley, and Addie Absher of Virginia Beach, Ben, Blair, and Jessan Eberdt of Durham; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in this area. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cemetery by the Rev. John Jordan. The family will receive friends in the Laskin Road Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts.
