She was born June 17, 1931, in Asheboro, N.C., to the late Mary Harrell Newlin and Claude Newlin. She is survived by her husband, Edward Conway Cheshire, to whom she was married for 55 years, and their seven children and 11 grandchildren. Her four sons are Edward Conway Cheshire Jr., Glenn Barron Cheshire and Mark Newlin Cheshire of Chesapeake and Lee Parker Cheshire of Norfolk; three daughters, Mary Katherine Shriver and husband Ken of Norfolk, Victoria Anne Warren and husband Mark of Virginia Beach and Patricia Ellen Cheshire of Chesapeake. Other survivors are a brother, Jim Newlin and wife Maureen of Virginia Beach; a sister, Linda Barclay and husband Patrick of Virginia Beach; a sister-in-law, Katherine Cheshire Tyler of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Pat was preceded in death by a beloved younger sister, Ann Newlin Vinson; and a dear grandson, Christopher Cheshire. Pat was devoted to her family. She enjoyed cooking and sewing for them as well as entertaining family and friends on special occasions. She loved to garden and spent many happy hours tending her flowers and vegetables. She was also an accomplished quilter. She was an avid reader of fiction and nonfiction. She studied creative writing at Old Dominion University and wrote several short stories, which she shared with her family. People were drawn to her vibrant personality, wonderful sense of humor, gift of storytelling and loving and giving spirit. When her children were in grade school, she was active in the PTA. She served as president of Norfolk Highlands Elementary School during the 1970-71 term. The following year, she was the first PTA president of the new Indian River High School in Chesapeake. She started one of the first volunteer teachers' aide programs in the Chesapeake school system while she was president of the PTA at Norfolk Highlands. Under the direction of teachers, parent volunteers worked with at-risk children helping to improve their reading and math skills. A celebration of Pat's life will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday in the Community Center of Lynnhaven Colony Congregational Church, 2217 West Great Neck Road.
