Born in Albemarle County, Mr. Chewning had made his home in this section 49 years, where he was one of the best known citizens. He conducted a drug store business in the community about 35 years. He was a son of the late John W. and Mrs. Mary Strange Chewning and is survived by his wife, Mrs. May Leake Chewning; two sons, Harry M. Chewning, Jr., of this city; Edward M. Chewning, Martinsville; three brothers, John W. and G.A. Chewning, of Concord, Fla. and S.S. Chewning, of Dwight, Ill.; four sisters, Mrs. Minnie S. Adison, Eastville; Mrs. Julia Magruder, Keswick; Mrs. Margaret Tutwilder, Birmingham, Ala. and Mrs. Arthur Morgan, Raleigh N.C. He was a member of Armstrong Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be conducted at the residence tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. Burial will be in the family lot in Magnolia Cemetery.
