His beloved wife of 48 years, Jane Black Clark, preceded him in death in 2002. David was born January 26, 1930, in Woodbury, NJ, to the late Rear Admiral David Henderson Clark, USN (ret) and Catharine Hutchinson Clark. One of three children, he is survived by a sister, Catharine "Dolly" Clark Rasmussen and her husband, John, of Bethesda, Maryland, and a sister-in-law, Lynn Adams Clark, wife of his late brother, Morton Hutchinson Clark, of Williamsburg, VA. He is also survived by his sister- in-law, Anna Black Hudgins, and her husband, C. Randolph Hudgins, of Norfolk, VA. The son of a naval officer stationed at Pearl Harbor in 1941, David often recalled stories about the day of the attack, including when he and his brother were on the garage roof watching Japanese planes race low over their house down to the harbor. As a typical Navy family, the Clarks moved frequently, and the children attended boarding school for continuity during their high school years. A graduate of Belmont Hill School, near Boston, David enjoyed soccer and was a strong stroke on the crew team. Soon after graduating from the University of Virginia in 1953, he met and married Jane Black Clark, and they settled in Norfolk, VA. He attended Naval Officer Candidates’ School and served 4 years’ active duty in Naval Communications, specializing in code breaking and intelligence, before an honorable discharge as a LTJG. David went into banking for the next 40 years, eventually retiring as Senior Vice-President for SunTrust Bank in Norfolk, VA. In 2011, David moved to Arbor Acres in Winston Salem to be closer to family. A long-time champion of Hampton Roads, David served on the boards of The Future of Hampton Roads, Regent University Business School and Old Dominion University College of Health Sciences, Norfolk Symphony and Lee’s Friends, among others. David leaves behind his 3 adoring daughters and their husbands whom he loved and admired: Alden and David Coe of Annapolis, Maryland; Janie and Jed Morrison of San Antonio, Texas; and Ashby and Jim Hopkins of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He took special interest and great joy in his 10 grandchildren: Jessica Coe Duke and husband William, Maria Coe, Timothy Coe and his wife Clare, and Jenny Coe Terronez and her husband Tyler; Ashby Morrison Christian and husband Joe, David Morrison and his wife Jenny, Brady Morrison and his wife Lauren; and Eliza, Tommy, and Catharine Hopkins. He also is survived by 7 great-grandchildren: Katherine, Jonathan, Maria and Sarah Duke, Clark and Hallie Christian, and David Terronez. To his grandchildren and great grandchildren, he was lovingly known as Pops. A strong faith, love for family and service to others were David’s strongest priorities. He had a natural ability to nurture and encourage younger friends who sought out David’s sound advice for personal and career counseling. He was known as a resourceful and creative thinker. He served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden at Church of the Good Shepherd in Norfolk and later enjoyed being a Lay Reader and Chalice Bearer at Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach. He was actively involved in the Leadership Prayer Breakfast of Norfolk and enjoyed bible studies and prayer groups. David had a particular interest in American history and took pleasure in his membership in the Society of the Cincinnati. He enjoyed tennis and golf and daily walks on the beach or in the neighborhood with his wife, Jane. David will be remembered as a gentleman, for his loyal friendship, thoughtful servant heart, and impeccable integrity. His unshakeable faith in God and the enduring love that he and his wife shared were an inspiration to his children and grandchildren. The Clark family is extremely grateful for the wonderful staff of the Fitzgerald Center at Arbor Acres who lovingly cared for David. We also extend our appreciation to the DayBreak Program at Centenary Methodist Church and Hospice and Palliative Care in Winston Salem. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 19, 2015, at Church of the Good Shepherd in Norfolk.
