S. CLARK, 79, INVENTOR, DIES; BUILT ENGINES Machine Shop Founder Devoted Later Years to Experimenting Cornelius Sylvester Clark, 79, former machine shop operator and construction engineer, of Norfolk, died yesterday at 7:45 a.m. at his residence, B-1 Westover Court Apartments, 1245 Westover Avenue, after a long illness. A native of Norfolk, he was the husband of Mrs. Katherine Selena Clark and son of the late William and Mrs. Anne Glennan Clark. Early in the century, he founded the Clark Machine Works at Lamberts Point and later set up a machine works at Colonna's Shipyard in Berkley. Known as one of the topflight mechanics in Tidewater, he developed in his shops a floating welding machine for use on ships standing in stream and built many types of engines. Invented New Engine His hobby was experimenting with mechanics, to which he devoted all his energies after retiring from business more than 10 years ago. At one time, he constructed an automobile engine which would run without water. His latest patent was granted for a type of automobile piston. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and of Norfolk Lodge No. 38, B. P. O. Elks. He was also a member of the Sacred Heart Holy Name Society. Survivors Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, William B. Clark; one brother, John I. Clark, and one sister, Mrs. Annie Millier (sic) Smith, all of Norfolk; one granddaughter, Mrs. M. R. Janis, and one great-granddaughter, Miss Mary Clark Janis, both of Toledo, Ohio. The body will be taken from the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments to Sacred Heart Church for services tomorrow at 10 a.m. Rosary services will be held at the funeral apartments today at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. DIED CLARK, CORNELIUS SYLVESTER - At the residence, B-1 Westover Court Apartments, No. 1245 Westover Avenue, Wednesday, April 7th, 1948, at 7:45 o'clock a.m., Cornelius Sylvester, husband of Mrs. Katherine Selena Clark and son of the late William and Mrs. Anne Glennan Clark, in the 80th year of his age. Remains will be taken from the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, No. 1501 Colonial Avenue, to Sacred Heart Catholic Church for services Friday morning at 10 o'clock.
