Born Oct. 13, 1899, she was the youngest child of the late Dennis Beverly and Amelia Yeates Beverly in Tunis, N.C. She attended Back Woods Elementary School, a one-room school near her father's farm in Tunis. She attended Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., and Water's Normal Institute in Winton, N.C., which later became C.S. Brown. She attended Virginia State Teachers College in Petersburg, Va. She was extremely artistic: a dress maker, tailor and caterer who sold dinners to the college students at Elizabeth City State Teachers College. Mrs. Clark is most remembered for making the first band uniforms for Elizabeth City State Teachers College by hand. She received a master's in art education from Columbia University in New York City. She also attended graduate school at the University of California. Mrs. Clark was a true missionary. One of her favorite Scriptures was I Corinthians, Chapter 13, which describes her life with the people around her. As a child she accepted Christ and attended Phillippi Baptist Church, Cofield, N.C. In Elizabeth City she attended a Baptist church. In Norfolk she became a member of First Baptist on East Bute Street where she remained a very active member. While in Washington, D.C., she enjoyed services at Mount Jezereel Baptist and Mount Ennon Baptist Church. She was always reading, working puzzles, singing songs and quoting Scripture. She loved music and especially hymns. Her favorites were ``I Need Thee Every Hour,'' ``Sweet, Sweet Spirit'' and ``Hold to God's Unchanging Hand.'' Mrs. Clark was predeceased by her husband of more than 50 years, James A. Clark Sr.; a son, James A. Clark Jr.; a daughter, Edith Holley Battle; a son-in-law, John Henry Battle; five sisters, Carrie Beverly Anderson, Joanna Beverly Holley, Blanch Beverly Vann, Cettie Beverly Manson and Elizabeth Beverly (12 years); two brothers, John Beverly and Arthur Beverly; four brothers-in-law, Gurney Columbus Anderson, Lemuel Holley, Charles Manson and Luke Vann; and a sister-in-law, Josephine Beverly. She is survived by her daughter, Amelia Beverly Clark Mebane; a son-in-lw, George Mebane; a daughter-in-law, Anne West Clark; several grandchildren, Antoinette Mebane Thorne, Melrese Battle Barnes, Johnese Battle Carmon, Ricky Clark, Vannesa Clark Brooks and Dr. Theresa-Ann Clark; grandsons-in-law, Ricardo Thorne Jr., William H. Barnes, Trent Carmon and Dr. Abdula Brooks; great-grandchildren, Toby and Jamaine Barnes, Mona and Alexander Brooks, Ciera and Ricardo Thorne III, Jaimie and Mitchelle Carmon, Afi Catellani-Clark; nieces, Lois Holley Harrell, Helen Holley Harrell, Virginia Anderson Watson, Bernice Anderson Dickinson, Mattie Vann Russell, Blanch Vann; and a great host of grand- and great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Bute Street, by Robert G. Murray. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. The family will be at 2810 Kimball Terrace and will assemble at the church at 10 a.m. Friday for the procession. Hale Funeral Home is in charge.
