There were no bruises or signs of foul play on the body and death is supposed to have resulted from excessive dissipation, as Cliff was known to have been a hard drinker. The body was found in a sitting position behind a crockery barrel and Patrolman Burnham, thinking he had a drunk on his hands, ’phoned for the police van. When the van arrived, the man was found to be dead, although the limbs had not yet become stiff. Coroner Kight was at once notified and, after he had viewed the body, it was removed to the city morgue, where a more careful examination was made. No evidences of foul play were discovered and Dr. Kight stated that he hardly thought an inquest necessary. Cliff, it is said, came to this city from New Jersey about three years ago. He was unmarried and seems to have had no regular place of abode, living around the cheaper classes of cafes and boarding houses. He was last seen alive by Edward Shannon, of the firm of Berry and Shannon, saloon keepers, of 173 Church street, who stated that Cliff came into his place about 8 o’clock last night in company with several sailors and asked for a drink. Cliff was drunk at the time and the drink was refused him. He then went out through the rear door into the alley, where he was later found dead.
