W. COATES DIES; BUSINESS, CIVIC OFFICIAL Was Membership Secretary Of Commerce Association Prior to Illness Robert Walter Coates, 68, membership secretary of the Norfolk Association of Commerce until he was taken ill last September, died last night at 9:40 o'clock at a hospital. Before joining the Commerce Association in October, 1942, he was connected with the Northwestern Life Insurance Company for 16 years. He was in the shoe business from 1910 to 1926. A native of Richmond County, he had resided in Norfolk for the past 60 years and was active in community and civic affairs. He was past president of both the Retail Merchants Association and the Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of Atlantic Lodge No. 3, A.F. & A.M. The son of the late Robert W. and Virginia Coates, he was educated in the Norfolk public schools. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Aubrey H. Thompson, of Richmond; two sons, Robert W. Coates, Jr., of Bradenton, Fla. and James R. Coates, of Norfolk and three grandchildren. The body was taken to the Cox Funeral Home.
