Mr. Cochran, who was a carpenter, was engaged in building a cottage of Willoughby Beach, near Fifth Street Station, for Dr. Daniel, a prominent physician of Richmond. About 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon Doctor and Mrs. Daniel, Mr. Cochran and his son, got into a rowboat and started a trip on the bay. After being out quite a while, on account of rough water they returned, landing at the long pier of the Willoughby Beach Company. Doctor and Mrs. Daniel landed on the pier leaving Mr. Cochran and his son in the boat. While the father was making the boat fast the son slipped over the side into the water, holding on to the edge of the boat. Presently he lost his hold and when Mr. Cochran looked for the lad he was some distance away from the boat, struggling to keep afloat. A colored man on the pier seeing the lad’s peril, jumped in to save him. So did his father. When Mr. Cochran reached his son’s side the boy grasped him about the neck and the two disappeared below the surface of the water. The lad was seen to reappear once more. Mr. Cochran never reappeared on the surface. As soon as possible a searching party went out, and after hard work secured the boy’s body. Mr. Cochran’s body has not yet been recovered. ******* Staunton Spectator and Vindicator, August 25, 1898, Image 2 The body of Mr. Cochran, of Richmond, who was drowned at Willoughby Spit Saturday, was recovered.
