Edward Cole, for more than 30 years a prominent member of the Norfolk bar and an outstanding figure in Virginia Masonic circles, died suddenly yesterday morning as he stood talking to L. P. Roberts in the latter’s store on Commercial place. The attorney had driven his own car to Norfolk from his country home at Pecanoak Farm, near Broad Creek, Princess Anne County, and was apparently in the best of health when he left his office, shortly after 8 o’clock, to call at Mr. Roberts’ place of business. With no signs of any illness, Mr. Cole suddenly collapsed, between 9:30 and 9:35, and death, it seemed, was instantaneous. Funeral services will be conducted from St. Luke’s Protestant Episcopal Church tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock, with Rev. Dr. D. W. Howard, the rector, officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, with the Knights Templar in charge of services there. Mr. Cole is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ellen Hardy Cole, and seven children: Capt. J. Edward Cole, Jr., U.S.A., of Fort Benning, Ga.; John Cole, his law and business partner here; S. Hardy Cole, Norfolk insurance man; Mrs. Arthur Emmerson, of Portsmouth and Misses Elizabeth, Frances and Alice Cole, of Norfolk, and one sister, Mrs. M. B. Jarratt, of Petersburg.
