Norfolk - Joseph Mortimer Commander, Jr. (Junie, Joe), lifelong resident of 
Norfolk, died Sunday, April 20, 2014, in Richmond, Va. He was born in 1916, in 
Norfolk, Va., to the late Joseph Mortimer Commander, Sr. and Corrine Carter. He 
was predeceased by his beloved wife of 68 years, Arline Addenbrook Commander, 
along with 4 sisters and 6 brothers. Mr. Commander graduated from Maury High 
School. Joe was a veteran of World War II and served in the South Pacific with 
the 3rd Engineer Special Brigade. He was a member First Presbyterian Church for 
70 years serving as a steward, deacon and elder along with serving coffee and 
children’s drinks after Sunday School for 35 years; member of Norfolk Yacht and 
Country Club; Master Councilor of DeMolay; Member Norfolk Kiwanis seniors. Joe 
worked as a local paper products salesman for 45 plus years, beginning with 
Frank G. Ennis Paper Co. in 1941. He was an avid duckpin bowler and golfer. He 
also was a frequent blood donor giving over 11 gallons to the American Red 
Cross. Survivors include his son, J. Richard Commander and wife, Jeannine, of 
Chester, VA; two granddaughters, Jennifer Mummert and Alison Knox and two great-
granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 
at First Presbyterian Church on Friday, April 25th at 11 a.m. by Rev. James 
Wood. Burial will be private with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, 
memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of the First 
Presbyterian Church, 820 Colonial Ave., Norfolk, VA 23507. H. D. Oliver Funeral 
Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be made
