Carter Commander To Be Conducted Tomorrow Joseph Carter Commander, aged 37, manager of the Norfolk office of the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company, died yesterday morning shortly before 9 o'clock at St. Vincent's Hospital from head injuries received in an automobile-street car collision eight hours earlier at Eighteenth street and Monticello avenue. An investigation of the accident, in which four other occupants of the automobile received injuries, was still being conducted by police last night. Mr. Commanders' death was attributed to a multiple fracture of the skull. H.L. Parker, Navy enlisted man attached to the U.S.S. Herbert, another occupant of the car, was transferred yesterday afternoon to the Naval Hospital at Portsmouth, where his condition is not considered serious. He was admitted to St. Vincent's Hospital after the accident and was treated for injuries about the head. E.L. Norvell, of 205 Oliver road, said to be the owner of the automobile, is confined to his home, where he is likewise being treated for head injuries by his private physician. Other occupants of the car injured in the crash were J.K. Young and Earl Melly, enlisted men attached to the U.S.S. Herbert, who received emergency treatment for minor facial lacerations. Mr. Commander, a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emelia Hughes Commander; three children, Leslie M., Joseph Carter, Jr. and Catherine E. Commander; his mother, Mrs. Corinne L. Commander and six brothers, Leslie, C.D., R.G., J.G., R.E.L. and J.M. Commander. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
