Connelly, 87, a resident of Marian Manor and priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond, died New Year's Day, Jan. 1, 2005. He was a native of Boston, Mass., and graduated from the University of Notre Dame and from St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore, Md. He was a reserve chaplain of the U.S. Air Force for 28 years, serving on active duty during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. When he retired from the Air Force in 1978, he served as auxiliary chaplain at Langley Air Force Base until 1988. Locally he served in several parishes: St. Mary's Sacred Heart and Little Creek Chapel in Norfolk, St. Therese in Chesapeake, St. Nicholas in Virginia Beach, the VA Hospital in Hampton, chaplain at Norfolk Sentara and chaplain-pilot of the Norfolk and Portsmouth Civil Air Patrol. Elsewhere, he served in nine other churches of the diocese. He was a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus and chaplain of Council 367, Norfolk. He was also a member of the Reserve Officers' Association. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, Virginia Beach, by Bishop Francis X DiLorenzo.
