Norfolk Virginian Tuesday June 12, 1883

                       Death of Mr. John Conway        

It is with much regret that we are called upon to announce the death of one of 
Portsmouth's most venerable and best known citizens, Mr. John Conway, who died 
last Sunday morning about 9 o'clock. Mr. John Conway died at his residence on 
Glasgow Street from paralysis of the heart, caused by palsy, from which disease 
he had been suffering for several years. He attended mass at 8 o'clock (Sunday) 
morning at St. Paul's Catholic Church and on arriving home was taken sick. Rev. 
T.J. Brady and Dr. L.A. Bilisoly were immediately sent for, but on their arrival 
he was unconscious and passed all aid.  His funeral took place yesterday morning 
at 11 o'clock from St. Paul's Catholic Church, after which the remains were 
carried to Norfolk for interment in the Catholic Cemetery. The funeral was 
conducted by Rev. T.J. Brady, assisted by Rev. Father O'Keefe of Norfolk, and 
the following gentlemen acted as pallbearers: Wm. Long, J.R. Coleman, Thomas 
Clarke, E. Barron, T. O'Connor, Owen Boyle, Wm. F. Carty and John Taylor. Mr. 
Conway was a very amiable and kind hearted gentleman and a devout member of St. 
Paul's Church, to which it is said that he left the bulk of a considerable 
fortune. He was employed for many years by the Seaboard and Roanoke Railroad 
Company, but for a long time was unable to attend to any active business.
