She at once sank in 50 feet of water. Nine lives were lost. The following a list: Mrs. Elizabeth Hudgins, a widow lady, and her colored servant; George W. Wilson, Mrs. Jessee Frederici, Mrs. G. W. Baber, Captain Edward Cooke, Norfolk; Miss M. Borum, of Matthews County, and the engineer of the Lumberman. Captain Brown of the Lumberman was struck on the head and seriously injured by the wheel of the Bell, but had the strength left to rescue his wife. Who had to crawl through the window of the pilot house to avoid being carried down by the first sinking of the boat. Mrs. Brown was severely injured and it is feared she will not survive.
