He was 74. Mr. Cooke was a former board member of Sovran Bank and of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was the first president of the Norfolk Unit of the American Cancer Society and was past president of the Ballentine Home. He served as a past chairman of the United Way Fund. He was a member of the Norfolk German Club, the Norfolk Navy League and First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk. He attended the University of Virginia and was a graduate of Woodberry Forest School and Norfolk Academy. Mr. Cooke, a Norfolk native, was the grandson of F.S. Royster, founder of the company. He began working with the Royster Co. just before World War II and, after serving in the Army Air Corps as a pilot, he returned to the company in 1945. He retired as vice president in 1980. He spent the last 13 months of the war as a German prisoner of war after his plane, a B17, was shot down.
