Leary Cooper, 87, Norfolk Lawyer NORFOLK - William Leary Cooper, 87, of 1315 Willow Wood Drive, Lakewood, a Norfolk lawyer, churchman, and civic leader, died Friday in a hospital. He was a native of Elizabeth City, N.C., and the husband of Mrs. Winifred Williams Cooper. Cooper, who lived in Norfolk 61 years and was still active in the practice of law, was chairman of the Men's Division of the United Fund for 12 years, and during World War II served on the local Selective Service Board. He was a Navy veteran of World War I and a member of Freemason Baptist Church, where he was a deacon for many years. He was a former member of the Norfolk- Portsmouth Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar Association. He was a former member also of the Executive Club and American Legion Lynch Anchorage Post 35, and an honorary member of Owens Masonic Lodge 164; Norfolk United Royal Arch Chapter 1, Grice Commandery 16, and Khedive Shrine Temple. Cultivating camellias and azaleas was his hobby, and his garden had a local reputation for its beauty. Other survivors include a niece and a nephew. The body was taken to Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, where a funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. William L. Lumpkin. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted, and that memorial donations be made to the Endowment Fund of Freemason Street Baptist Church.
