The Norfolk Virginian Pilot August 5, 1943


Ella Penman Cooper, aged 66, widow of William L. Cooper, died at the residence 
of her sister, Mrs. Blanche Penman Davis, 1619 Lafayette Boulevard, this 
morning at 7:45 o’clock after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late 
John and Mrs. Margaret Harris Penman, a native of Norfolk and was a resident of 
Washington, D.C., for over 30 years, returning here three years ago. 
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ada Cooper Leek, of East Orange, N.J.; two 
sisters, Mrs. Ada L. Kroenert and Mrs. Blanche Penman Davis, of Norfolk; three 
brothers, T.R. Penman and James Andrew Penman, of Norfolk and Richard J. 
Penman, of Baltimore, Md.; two grandchildren, Mrs. James E. Davis, of 
Washington, D.C., and Staff Sergt. Edward P. Cooper, of U.S. Army and great 
grandchild. Mrs. Cooper was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, of 
Washington. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 4 o’clock 
from the funeral chapel of James V. Derry, 1920 Colley Avenue. Burial will be 
in Cedar Grove.
