Corprew-Sunday evening at 8 o’clock, after a lingering illness, John B. Corprew, aged 40 years, 4 months, and 8 days. The funeral will take place at the Granby Street Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon, at 5 o’clock. Friends and acquaintances are invited to attend. Norfolk Virginian Tuesday May 12, 1885 Mr. John B. Corprew, a highly esteemed citizen of this city, died at his residence on Granby Street Sunday evening at 8 o’clock, aged forty years. Mr. Corprew was for a long time a prominent merchant of Norfolk and a business man of intelligence. In 1869 he went into the dry goods business under the firm name of Campe & Corprew. In 1872 the firm changed to that of Corprew. In 1872 the firm changed to Corprew, Armstrong, and Hunter, afterwards to Corprew, Armstrong & Co, and again to Corprew & Hunter. In 1883 his health failed him and he retired from the business. He was married in 1868 to Miss E. A. Burruss, daughter of Cicero Burruss. His wife and two children survive him. Mr. Corprew was a steward for some time in the Granby Street Church, and was a Mason in high standing. He also belonged to the Royal Arcanum, Legion of Honor, and the Masonic Mutual Benefit Association. He was a man universally loved in the community by reason of his great generosity and kindness of heart. A good citizen has passed away and few good men who have died in Norfolk have left a larger number of affectionate friends. The funeral will take place this afternoon from the Granby St. M.E. Church. Public Ledger, Wed., May 13, 1885, pg. 1 The funeral of this gentleman took place yesterday afternoon from the Granby Street M.E. Church, and was attended by a very large number of friends and acquaintances, and the orders of which in life he had been a member. The services were conducted by Rev. R.N. Sledd, D.D., the pastor, assisted by Rev. George D. Armstrong, D.D. of the First Presbyterian Church. The religious services were concluded at the cemetery, where the remains were interred with the Masonic rites of the Masonic Order. The following gentlemen acted as pall- bearers: Messrs. S.P. Moore, C.L. Upshur, Charles Pickett, W.R. Hudgins, Rev. Robert Gatewood, Charles E. Yeatman, Henry Jones, M.L. T. Davis, J.W. Perry and C.W. Buckingham.
