Oliver Funeral Apartments November 10, 2021 Angelica Del Consuelo Flores Cortez, age 47, was born to eternal life on the Lord’s Day, Sunday, October 31, 2021, at her home in Norfolk, Virginia, surrounded by her husband and children. She was born June 10, 1974, in San Bernardino, California, the oldest child of Joseph & Ernestine Flores. She attended San Bernardino High School, rival high school to San Gorgonio High, where the love of her life, Michael Cortez attended. Their paths officially intertwined at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, where they both attended catechism classes. He asked her if she wanted to buy some chocolate (for a fundraiser that they were BOTH selling for), and she said no. She said yes when it counted, however, and they were married in July, 1993, shortly after Michael joined the Navy. Their first assignment as a married couple was in Norfolk, Virginia, where their first child, daughter Niana, was born. They spent a short six months stationed in San Diego, California, then headed back across the country to Woodbridge, Virginia. There they rediscovered and deepened their Catholic faith under the guidance of Father Francis Peffley. It was also there that they made many lifelong friends and welcomed four more children, Arianna, Dominic, Maryanna, and Michael Gabriel. The next move, in 2001, took the family back to Norfolk, Virginia, where they would remain for the next 20 years. The youngest Cortez children, Carlos, Joseph, and Diego, were born here. Angelica and her family found community at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where she took pride in her work as a catechist. She became a grandmother in September 2020 and poured love onto her precious granddaughter, Serena, who became an instant celebrity via Angelica’s Facebook page. Angelica had a generous heart and soul, and loved everyone she crossed paths with. Her motto was to “Always Love First.” She touched everyone with the warmth of her contagious laughter and smile. A pure example of a loving wife and mother, she lived for her children. The last decade of her life was difficult as she was plagued by health problems. Angelica accepted her suffering as God’s will for her life and in fact, generously embraced her cross as the way to salvation for herself and for those she loved. There was no wrong Angelica would not pardon. She was generous with her forgiveness, embodying the Beatitude, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” You had more than a second chance with Angelica, once a friend, always a friend. She was a staunch defender of her faith, the unborn, and her politics, as anyone who engaged her online could attest. She loved Our Lord and Our Lady, Andrea Boticelli, Michael Landon, her husband, sushi, dark red lipstick, and her friends and family. In that order. :) Angelica is preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Ernestine Flores, and five unborn children. She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Michael Cortez, eight children, Niana, Arianna, Dominic (Rachel), Maryanna, Michael Gabriel, Carlos, Joseph, and Diego, granddaughter, Serena, father, Joseph Flores, sister, Monica, and brother, Carlos. She leaves an emptiness in the lives of many other relatives and friends who were inspired by her model of unconditional love and her smile in the face of great suffering. A viewing will be held Wednesday, November 10, from 6-8 PM at H.D. Oliver Funeral Home, 1501 Colonial Avenue, Norfolk. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Thursday, November 11, at 12:00 PM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 154 West Government Ave., in Norfolk. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, 3000 Church St., Norfolk.
