William Couper, historiographer of Virginia Military Institute from 1925-1954, died Saturday afternoon in her home. A native of Purcellville, she as a daughter of John Townsend and Mrs. Virginia Bitzer Hirst and a member of Robert E. Lee Episcopal Church, Lexington. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Norman Dudley Johnson, of New York; a son, Dr. John Lee Couper of Tenafly, N.J., a brother, Dr. J. Terry Hirst of Purcellville; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Monday at 12:15 p.m. in of Robert E. Lee Episcopal Church by the Rev. D. Holmes Irving. A funeral service will be held at noon Tuesday in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk, by the Rev. Beverley Tucker White.
