Private services at her home tomorrow will be followed by interment in the family plot at Norfolk, Va. Wife of William Couper, Mrs. Couper was the only daughter of the late Thomas Ball and Mrs. Ellen Ball. She was born in Boston, Mass., on May 26, 1857, and was taken to Florence, Italy, as a young girl. It was at her father’s studio at Florence that she met Mr. Couper, who came to study under the then outstanding American sculptor. They were married on May 9, 1878, in Florence. HERE IN 1897 Nineteen years later, Mr. and Mrs. Couper and their sons came to Montclair, making their first home in South Mountain Avenue, a few doors from the site of the Montclair Art Museum, in the organization of which both Mr. and Mrs. Couper played an active part. They later had a house erected for them at 105 Upper Mountain Avenue and finally moved to the Berkeley Place residence. Spending her entire life in an artistic millieu, Mrs. Couper was acquainted with most of the well-known artists of the past two generations. She was an accomplished musician, having studied piano under the best of European instructors of the time, but never appeared on the concert platform. Of her three sons, one became a musician and another a painter. SIX GRANDCHILDREN Mother of Thomas Ball Couper of 11A Oxford Street, William A. Couper of Cortland, N Y., and Richard H. Couper, Mrs. Couper is survived by the first two and by her husband, two granddaughters, Mrs. Rosalind Nordlie and Miss Nancy Couper; four grandsons, Thomas Couper, William Couper, Clive Couper and Henry Rusby Couper, and one great-grandson, Eric Nordlie. She was a communicant at St. Luke’s Church and was interested in several local philanthropies. She was the donor of two pieces of sculpture by her father, now in the sculpture hall of the museum. COUPER – At Montclair, N.J., on Thursday, July 20, 1939, Elisa Ball, beloved wife of William Couper, mother of Thomas B. and William A. Couper.
