Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Mr. Couper attended Principia College and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1939, with a PhD in organic chemistry. During the 50s and 60s he worked as a DuPont chemist at Benger Laboratory, where his research was instrumental in the development of nylon, orlon and Lycra. Mr. Couper was a man of many enthusiasms and a love of life. In Waynesboro, he led a Great Books Discussion Group for 17 years, participated on the Community Concert Board, served as Chairman of the Waynesboro School Board, founded the Human Relations Council and was an active member of the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship. An avid gardener, he donated his day lily collection to the community when he moved to Charlottesville. Known locally for his expertise in birds and wild mushroom identification, he also studied Italian and enjoyed ballroom dancing. He founded and led a poetry discussion group for twenty years. During his 14 years at Westminster Canterbury, Mr. Couper was an active member on the Residents’ Committee, wrote for the community newsletter and served on the flower committee. From 2003 until 2006, he chaired the Library Committee, re-organizing and developing standards for the James Jessup Memorial Library at WCBR. He was preceded in death by his son, Monroe Couper Jr., He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth Bowden Couper, of Charlottesville, Virginia; a daughter, Elizabeth Couper-Kuhlen, and her husband, Rainer Kuhlen, of Berlin, Germany; a son, Charles Couper and his wife, Diana Couper, of Brooklyn, New York; a daughter, Mary Lischer and her husband, Jeff Lischer, of Washington, DC; a daughter-in-law, Annie Couper, of South Orange, New Jersey; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A service and reception to celebrate Monroe Couper's life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 3, 2006, at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, 250 Pantops Mountain Road, Charlottesville, VA 22911. Memorials may be made to the Waynesboro Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship, 565 Pine Street, Waynesboro, VA 22980.
