Cowan, 56, of Picadilly Street, went to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Norfolk and attended Norview High School. Ray was a diesel mechanic who enjoyed gardening and repairing lawnmowers for his neighbors. He most recently worked for Harmon Glass Co. and PPG Industries. Ray was predeceased by his father, Raymond T. Cowan. He is survived by his mother, Ada Cowan, of Norfolk; daughter, Melissa Cowan, of Florida; three sisters, Mary Rogar, and her husband, Walter, of Norfolk, Alma Cowan, and Sharon Cowan, both of Virginia Beach; brother, Allon (sic) Cowan, and his wife, Shirley, of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, 3000 Church St., Norfolk. The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated. Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is handling the arrangements.
