COX DIED YESTERDAY Prominent Citizen of the Eighth Ward Succumbed to Sudden Attack of Illness Elijah Leander Cox Sr., one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens of the Eighth ward, died last evening at 9:30 o'clock after a brief illness at the family residence, 126 Walnut street. He was taken ill Tuesday morning with Bright's disease and complications set in. Prior to that time he had been in the best of health and was on the street Monday attending to business. Notwithstanding his age of nearly 69 years he was active in business and seemed to enjoy the best of health and all of his facilities. He was born in Moyock, N. C., March 19, 1842, and entered Reyaldson College of his State in his teens where he remained until the beginning of the Civil War when he left college and entered the 68th North Carolina Volunteers, the first company in the State, under the command of Col. Yellearly. From the ranks he gradually rose to the rank of captain. He was captured July 1863 and was imprisoned at Fort Delaware where he remained a prisoner until the close of the war. In the reconstruction days he returned home and pursued his profession as funeral director in which vocation he had been continuously engaged for forty years. Twenty-five years ago he moved to Berkley ward with his family where he continued since and a part of that time was the only funeral director of the ward. The deceased was one of the charter members and was past commander of Niemeyer- Shaw Camp, Confederate Veterans, with which organization he always took a keen interest and was very closely identified with the cause. He was a member, deacon and trustee of the Berkley Avenue Baptist Church and was very closely identified with all of the workings of the church. He was one of its most active workers and took a very active part in the recent improvement made to the church edifice. He was a member of Berkley Lodge 167, A. F. and A. M., Chesapeake Tribe No. 50, I. O. R. M., Lee Lodge 74 and Oakdale Encampment, I. O. O. F., and Tidewater Council No. 30, Jr . O. U. A. M. He married Miss Elizabeth Matilda Wiginton, daughter of the late Robert Wiginton, of Eastern North Carolina, and is survived by a widow and seven sons and daughters. They are: Mrs. C. C. Barclay, Mrs. C. H. Culpepper, E. Lee Cox Jr., Robert L. Cox, Mrs. E. C. Savage, W. W. Cox, and Miss Sadie Cox; four sisters, Mrs. James Holt, Mrs. Robert Willet, the latter of California, and Mrs. Margaret Willet, of Nebraska; Mrs. David Pritchard, Camden, N.
