A native of Norfolk, Mr. Cox was the son of Kathryn A. Cox and the late George W. Cox Sr. He was a graduate of James Barry Robinson High School and attended Old Dominion University. Active in sports all his life, he volunteered as the basketball coach at Holy Trinity Catholic School and was also the Junior Varsity Coach at Norfolk Catholic High School for several years. He was a former high school referee with the Southeastern High School Basketball Association and was a member of the Ocean View Golf Course Association. He also played softball for many years with various championship teams. He was a 30-year member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 3548 in Ocean View. Other memberships include the Hampton Roads Maritime Association and the Hampton Roads Traffic Club. He was employed for 32 years by Lehigh Portland Cement Company of the Heidelberger Zement Family. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Barbara F. Cox; their twin children, Tracey A. Cox and Michael F. Cox, and youngest son, Carl J. Cox, all of Norfolk; his granddaughter, Taylor Anne; his sister, Jean Mairee C. Vigneault of Norfolk; his two brothers, George W. Cox Jr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Paul V. Cox of St. Pete Beach, Fla. He is also survived by his father-in-law, Joseph T. Fitzpatrick and sisters-in-law, Kathleen F. Williams and Mary Regis F. Williams, as well as 10 nieces and nephews. Michael was devoted to Ocean View, its beaches, its golf course, and its people. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church by Father Edward L. Richardson and Father Wayne Ball. The family will receive friends in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday.
