Elsie Mae Cromwell, 83, passed away at Bayside Health Care Center on April 1, 
2004. She was a Norfolk native, but lived much of her life in Virginia Beach, most 
recently at Marion Manor Assisted Living. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic 
Church.

Elsie graduated from the old Norfolk General Hospital School of Nursing, Old 
Dominion University and received her Masters degree from Columbia University.

She was supervisor of nurses at Norfolk General Hospital, then she joined the U.S. 
Navy Nurses Corps, after which she worked at the Public Health service hospital in 
Norfolk.

Elsie was predeceased by her brother, Joshua Rufus Cromwell III. She is survived 
by her sister-in-law, Jacqueline S. Cromwell of Virginia Beach; two nephews, 
Michael Cromwell of Locust Grove, Va., James Mark Cromwell and his wife Marjorie 
of Virginia Beach and their children, Joshua and Chelsea; her niece, Betsy C. 
Slate, and her husband, Brandon, of Virginia Beach and their children, Elizabeth, 
Kate and Wright; cousins, Mary Whitley Haycox and Jody K. Haycox, both of Virginia 
Beach; and several other relatives and friends.

A graveside service will be held at St. Marys Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk at 11 
a.m. Monday by Father Thomas Quinlan. The family and friends will meet at H.D. 
Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, at 9:30 a.m. the morning of the service 
and follow in procession to the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church, 
1279 North Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23454.
