Born in Norfolk, Mrs. Cross was raised in Elizabeth City, N.C., where she, Miss Daisy Sykes, graduated from P. W. Moore High School in 1939. She then went on to attend Elizabeth City State Teachers College. Graduating from Elizabeth City State Teachers College in 1944, Miss Sykes went on to teach in the Greenville County Public School System. While teaching in the Greenville County Public School System, Miss Daisy Sykes met and married the late Nelson A. Cross of Edenton, N.C. They went on to reside in Norfolk where they had one child, Sherman A. Cross I. Mrs. Cross taught in the Norfolk public school system from 1963 until her retirement in 1986. Mrs. Cross furthered her education by studying at Columbia University, New York, N.Y., where she completed a masters degree with a concentration in reading in 1967. Mrs. Daisy S . Cross , a member of Grace Episcopal Church on Brambleton Avenue, was a member of its St. Monica' s Guild in which she served actively for more than 20 years. The president of the guild for the past few years, she served in this capacity until her expiration on Dec. 2, 2007. She was also a long-standing member of the Daughters of the King and a number of civic organizations. Survivors of Mrs. Cross include her son, Sherman A. Cross of Norfolk and his fiancee Leslie D. Sims; her nephews, Leroy Brinkley and his wife Odessa Brinkley, Sherman Valentine and his wife Olga Valentine; and stepchildren, Nelson A. Cross Jr., of Los Angeles, Calif., and Marie Jordan of Boston, Mass. She also had 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at noon Friday in Grace Episcopal Church with Father Cobb officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. The remains will be ready for viewing from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Carlos A. Howard Funeral Homes, Norfolk Chapel, where the family will receive family and friends from 7 to 8 p.m. The remains will be placed in church at 10 a.m. The family will assemble at the residence at 11 a.m. for the procession. www.carlosahowardfuneralhomes.com.
