Born in Edenton, N.C., Mr. Cross was a resident of the Norfolk area for 52 years. A stone cutter by trade, Nelson Cross cut the marble and/or stone that covers Kirn Memorial Library, the Masonic Temple beside Granby High school, the Chrysler Museum, the tomb covering of Gen. Douglas MacArthur within the MacArthur Memorial, and a number of additional structures in the Hampton Roads area. Survivors include his wife, Daisy Sykes Cross; his sons, Sherman A. Cross I of Norfolk and Nelson A. Cross Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif.; his daughter, Marie Jordan of Boston, Mass.; his nephews, Leroy Brinkley, Sherman Valentine, Milton Brinkley and Norman Brinkley Jr.; his nieces, Reva Staunton, Alice B. Hamilton, Mary Elizabeth Sessons, Myrilin Skinner and Lillian King; the spouses of the above, Patricia Parrish-Cross, Betty Cross, Olga Valentine and Charlie Sessons; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; special cousins, Lucey Moore, James Gregory and Warren Mitchell; and a host of other relatives and friends. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hale Funeral Home, Norfolk. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church of Chesapeake by the Rev. Dr. Donald Taylor, pastor. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery , Norfolk.
