Harvie Cunningham, a popular member of the Virginia Pilot Association and prominent in the business life of Norfolk for the past twenty-five years, died yesterday morning at 9:45 o'clock. He was 53 years old. He had been unwell for more than a year, and three weeks ago returned from Buffalo Lithia Springs, where he went in search of health. His wife died about a month ago. Captain Cunningham was a native of Richmond. After a few years in the tug boat business with Captain J. J. Cole, he became a master pilot. He at one time owned the Norfolk baseball club, and, while operating that franchise, developed Christy Mathewson. He was a director of the Seaboard National and Church street banks, and of the Twin City Permanent Building Association. He took an active interest in local and State politics and was a member of the city council at one time. He is survived by one son, E. Harvie Cunningham, Jr., of Newport News; one sister, Mrs. Anna F. Cole, of Campostella; two brothers, Ernest Cunningham, of Newport News, and C C. Cunningham, of San Francisco, Cal. The funeral will take place Tuesday at the home of his sister, Mrs. Anna F. Cole, at Campostella, and will be conducted by Rev. Father John J. Doherty. Burial will be in St. Mary’s cemetery.
