Curling, Retired Commander; Taught in Norfolk Alexandria, VA - Samuel Franklin Curling Sr., 82, a retired Navy commander and former school teacher, died Aug. 19, 1991. Cmdr. Curling, a Navy personnel specialist had retired from the Office of Chief of Naval Operations. He was a veteran of World War II. He was born in Norfolk and was a 1931 graduate of Hampton-Sidney College. He was a former teacher in the Norfolk County public schools. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Retired Officers Association. Survivors include two daughters, Caroline Ferguson of Leesburg and Diane Curling of Reston; a son, Samuel Curling, Jr. of Richmond; a sister, Mary G. Rupert, and a brother, John D. Curling, both of Chesapeake; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. Hugh C. White. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery, Norfolk. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. today in Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk. Memorial donations may be made to the restoration fund of Christ Episcopal Church, 118 N. Washington St., Alexandria.
