F. Curling, assigned to the Third, or Berkley ward police precinct, died yesterday afternoon about 3 o'clock at the Lawford hospital. The officer had been confined in the hospital since November 16 when he was operated upon for appendicitis Several days (after) the operation was performed by Dr. Lawford, Detective Curling began to improve and the attending physicians became encouraged. Wednesday he began to weaken and grew worse until the end came. Immediately upon being advised by Sergeant Boggs, of the Third precinct, of the death of the officer, the flag on the new Central police station was put at half-mast and Turnkey Woodhouse went to the roof of the new building and struck the fire bell twenty-five times announcing the death of the detective. Officer Curling was one of the seven officers who were placed on duty when the Straightout Democratic administration became in power in Berkley ward seven years ago. He was a young man and developed into a splendid officer. Police Chief Kizer, recognizing his worth, appointed him as a plain clothes officer ten months ago. The body was removed to his home, No. 55 Walnut street. Officer Curling was 29 years old, was a son of Mrs. Sarah Portlock Curling and the late James Curling of Hickory, Norfolk county. He is survived by his mother, a wife and two small children, one sister, Mrs. Roy Clark, of Norfolk, four half sisters and a half brother, all of the county. The funeral arrangements will be announced later. ************************************************************************ The funeral of the late Detective Jas. F. Curling will be conducted from the Berkley Avenue Baptist Church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. W.A. Smith, the pastor, will officiate, assisted by other ministers of the city.
