B. Curtis, 72, retired Norfolk school teacher who spent 36 years in the field of education, churchman and esteemed citizen, was held at Bank Street Baptist Church, the Rev. J. B. Henderson, pastor, officiating, Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 3 p.m. Mr. Curtis died Sunday, Oct. 6. Born in Lecompte Parrish, La, of the late Malvina and Bonaparte Curtis, for more than 50 years he was actively engaged in church work. For a number of years Mr. Curtis was a Sunday school teacher, and until his illness served as deacon in Bank Street Baptist Church. Since graduating from Virginia Union University in 1902, he taught in Louisiana and Virginia. From the beginning of the public high school in Norfolk until six years ago he was head of the mathematics department in Booker T. Washington High School, and principal of the night school for more than 20 years. Assisting in conducting the funeral were the Revs. R. H. Bowling and O. C. Jones. Dr. J. W. Barco of Virginia Union University, D. C. Jacox of this city, and the Rev. W. W. Hill of Richmond, gave words of comfort to the bereaved. Honorary and active pallbearers were: John W. Baker, Winston Douglas, James P. Archer, Melvin Alston, George W. Williams, Dennis Ashburne, Floyd Marshall, James W. Spellman, John S. Selden, Hilliary C. Wright, C. A. Palmer, Landy Taylor, and Chester Robinson. Besides his wife, Mrs. Mary Thomas Curtis, the deceased is survived by his two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth C. Milner and Miss Susan M. Curtis; a half-brother, the Rev. E. Charles Curtis of Louisiana, and two grandchildren, Willa and Harriett Milner. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery with Wheeler Funeral Home in charge.
