Mrs. Cutherell was born in old Norfolk County as Margaret Annie Blanchard, daughter of the late James Warner Blanchard and Wenona Rawlings Blanchard. She was the only woman in a class of three to graduate from South Norfolk's first high school. Later she taught children of Polish immigrants in grades one through seven in a rural one room schoolhouse at Bowers Hill. She married Capt. Joseph Henry Downing Sr. in Norfolk on Oct. 1, 1922. Mrs. Cutherell was widowed in 1931 and then entered the world of commerce during the great depression with three small children. She retired from the former Esso Standard Oil Corporation in 1949 and devoted the remainder of her life to church, philanthropic and community service. She was widely read in church and biblical literature, being a lifelong student herself. She was a person of natural leadership and great wisdom. She imparted her faith in God during her many years as teacher and leader. She was a model for the lives of her many students, friends and associates and often composed poems, which she dedicated to them. She is survived by her sons, Cmdr. Joseph H. Downing Jr. of Norfolk, Thomas B. Downing of North Haven, Conn., and Carroll J. Downing of Yulee, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Pierce of Norfolk; grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted on Thursday at 2 p.m. in First Lutheran Church, Norfolk, by Pastor James G. Cobb. Mrs. Cutherell willed her body to medical science. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
