He first engaged in the feed business on East Berkley avenue, and later in the feed and building material business, Liberty and Fourteenth streets. He sold this business and manufactured ice and box shooks, using the shavings and other refuse from the box plant to fuel the furnaces of the ice plant. The latter business was sold 21 years ago when Mr. Cuthrell launched in the banking business, erecting a three story bank and office building at Liberty and Twenty-second street, South Norfolk, the bank being known as the Bank of South Norfolk. After a successful career of a number of years, the bank was merged with the Merchants and Planters Bank in which he had been vice president and director since its organization. Mr. Cuthrell was also vice president and director of the Berkley Permanent Building and Loan Association. He was a charter member of the First Christian Church, Main street, Berkley He was a native of Elizabeth City, N.C., but had made his home here for the past 65 years. He was the son of the late John E. and Sarah Cuthrell and husband of the late Sarah Elizabeth Jones Cuthrell. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. L.R. Blassingham, Norfolk; Mrs. W.M. Townsend and Mrs. D.J. Sullivan, both of South Norfolk; three sons, John E. Cuthrell, Los Angeles, Cal.; Jessie Edward Cuthrell, Norfolk; and Roy L. Cuthrell, Flushing, N.Y.; one sister, Mr. J.D. McLean, New York City, 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The body will rest at his home where funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock. The Rev. L. Oakey Wilburn, pastor of Chesapeake Avenue Methodist Church and the Rev. J.L. Blassingham, of Norfolk will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot by the side of wife and a son in Magnolia Cemetery.
