Cuthriell, of the Norfolk Police Department, in command of the Lambert’s Point station, died yesterday afternoon, at 5:30 o’clock, at his home, No. 1021 Wood Street, from pneumonia, aged 68 years. He was a native of Norfolk County, but had resided in Norfolk many years, having been connected with the city police department for thirty years, rising from substitute patrolman to captain. He was a man of sterling character, genial and generous of heart, and an officer of high efficiency. As soon as his death was announced the bell at the police headquarters was tolled in respect to his memory, and the flag on headquarters has been half- staffed and the stations draped in mourning. Captain Cuthriell was a member of Lafayette Lodge of Odd Fellows, Wyandotte Tribe of Red Men, Norfolk Lodge of Owls, Norfolk Lodge of Elks, and No. 16 Lodge, Knights of Pythias of Portsmouth. Besides his widow, who was Miss Annie E. Wininger, he is survived by one son, Stephen W. Cuthriell; one daughter, Mrs. Irving D. Mayo, and one grandson, George Leonard Mayo, all of this city; three sisters, Mrs. W.H. Gunn, of Norfolk, and Mrs. J.D. Cadmus and Mrs. I.O. Bailey, both of Portsmouth. The funeral occurs at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Cumberland Street Methodist Church, the pastor, Rev. Dr. Thomas officiating. Interment in Elmwood.
