Born July 18, 1919 in Norfolk, Mrs. Dabney retired as a teacher of English from Norfolk Public Schools after more than 40 years. She was a lifelong, faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church. She was an emeritus member of Norfok Chapter, Chums, Incorporated and a life member of the National Education Association. She was the widow of William N. Dabney . Known affectionately as ``Aunt Van'' to hundreds of former students, she shared her vast knowledge and abundant artistic talent far beyond the classroom. She had served on the boards of The Jamestown Cross, Chesapeake Library System and Chesapeake Civic Chorus. She is survived by her niece, Sylvia A. Stephenson of Chesapeake; a special cousin, Catherine Wilson of Norfolk; and a number of other cousins, friends and extended family. A funeral will be held at noon Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church by Fr. Harold J. Cobb. The Chums memorial service will be held at the church one hour prior to the funeral. Viewing at Hale Funeral Home will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Grace Episcopal Church.
