He was born in Norfolk, Va., to the late Linda Neeb Dailey and C. W. Dailey. John was a U. S. Army Air Force veteran, having served his country during the Korean War in the intelligence division. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and was an avid reader, having a wonderfully large library of books and manuscripts, all of which he had read once or twice throughout his life. John was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and was an active member for almost 50 years of the Knights of Columbus, Council 367 in Norfolk. It was a joy for him to participate in all of their charitable works of giving to the needy and their many works of mercy. Left to cherish his memory is his brother, Ernest S. Dailey, of Norfolk; two sisters, Gloria D. Wiggins, and Dorothy D. Petrulis, and husband, Albert, all of Virginia Beach; and many loving nieces and nephews, especially Peter A. Petrulis of Virginia Beach. The family would like to express their profound appreciation to Dr. Michael T. Hopkins of the V.A. Hospital and to Dr. Thomas Alberico of Virginia Oncology for their compassionate and loving care of John during the last years of his life. It was his wish that there be no flowers at his service, and in his words, "Masses for the deceased will be greatly appreciated, God Is Merciful". For those who would like to send a memorial donation, please do so to the Knights of Columbus, Council 367, 5201 Kennebeck Ave., Norfolk, VA 23513. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6 until 7:30 p.m. at the Norfolk Chapel of H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2014, at the church with Father Mattias Lusembo officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Online condolences may be offered to the family through www.hdoliver.com.
