Norfolk Virginian November 17, 1896
The community received with painful regret and deep sympathy the news of Mrs. 
Annie J. Dalby’s death, which occurred at 5:10 p.m. Sunday at the home of her 
parents, Mr. O. J. and Mrs. Sallie A. Spann. She leaves, besides her husband, Mr. 
W. T. Dalby, a little 3-year-old daughter. The family had resided at Churchland 
for some time, whence Mrs. Dalby come about two weeks ago on a visit to her 
parental home, where she was taken not many days ago with diphtheria, of a very 
malignant type. She was only 20 years of age and she leaves a large circle of 
mourning friends and relatives. Rev. E. B. McCluer, of the Park Avenue 
Presbyterian Church, preached her funeral at the grave in Elmwood Cemetery, where 
her remains were interred, yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock.
