Dalby, one of the best known residents of Berkley ward, died yesterday afternoon at 12:30 o'clock at the Norfolk Protestant Hospital after an illness of several months duration. The deceased was 80 years old and had been in failing health consequent thereto and unable to perform any duty for more than a year. Several weeks ago his condition became that serious that he was removed to the hospital for attention. Mr. Dalby was a native of Lynnhaven, Princess Anne County, but had spent the major part of his life in Berkley ward, he being among its oldest citizens. For a great many years he resided in Chestnut street at the corner of Middleton street with his wife, who preceded him to the beyond a few years ago. His home was one of the oldest houses on this side of the river and was highly prized. Shortly after the death of his wife it was sold and razed. During his early days he was in the dry goods business in the city proper, but later engaged in the real estate business, which he followed until he became disabled for duty and was for a long time the only person in the business on this side of the river. For many years he was an active member of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church and was a member of the vestry until the time of his death. He is survived by three sons: Charles Dalby, South Norfolk; William and Byron Dalby, who are away from the city. The funeral will take place Friday and the hour will be announced later. **************************************************************** The funeral of the late John F. Dalby, who died at the Norfolk Protestant hospital Wednesday afternoon, will be conducted from the residence of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Annie Dalby, in Chestnut street this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. E.W. Cowling, rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, will officiate and the interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
