Bud was born on November 7th, 1921 and is the son of the late Robert Gatewood Dashiell and Marguerite Miller Dashiell. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Katherine (Kitty) Eaton Dashiell; his children Susan Dashiell Brown, her husband George H. Brown of Norfolk, Robert Gatewood Dashiell, III, his wife Lynn of Norfolk, Curtis J. Dashiell, his wife Debi of Atlanta, William E. Dashiell, his wife Judy of Norfolk and Michael M. Dashiell and his wife Julie of Arlington VA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Robert T. Brown and his wife Kelly, Russell D. Brown and his wife Allison, Gregory E. Brown, Cory L. Dashiell, Casey L. Dashiell, Merrill T. Dashiell, Benjamin J. Dashiell, Ryan E. Dashiell, Christina S.K. Dashiell, Katherine G. Dashiell, William E. Dashiell, Jr., Michael M. Dashiell, Jr., Brooke S. Dashiell and his great grand daughter Caroline K. Brown. He is also survived by his sister, Anne Dashiell Kiley, sister in-law Alice Eaton Baine and many nieces and nephews. Bud graduated from Maury High School in the Class of 1939. He volunteered and served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and trained as a navigator in the B- 17. He completed his service at the war's end. After the war he attended and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1950 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He reentered Military Service in the United Stated Coast Guard Reserves; he retired as the Commanding Officer of the Fifth District Coast Guard Reserve Unit. He accepted a position with The Virginian Pilot and The Ledger Star as their staff electrical engineer. He retired from The Virginian Pilot in 1976 as the Assistant Production Director. Upon his retirement he started R. G. Electric Company Inc. and the Consulting Engineering Firm - Robert G. Dashiell, Jr., P.E., Inc. Bud was a licensed engineer in over 24 states across the country. He worked with each of these firms for over 33 years and until his death. He always enjoyed life. He had strong passions. He loved his family, tennis, traveling and boating. He first picked up the sport of tennis while courting Kitty and never looked back. He could be found daily playing at Fergus Reid Tennis Courts with many life long friends and family. He passed his passion along to his children and grandchildren and he could be found cheering them through many matches. Bud enjoyed spending time on the water and watched countless sunsets from the rear deck of the Miss Margaret. He loved to travel with Kitty. They traveled most of the world including Europe, China, the far-east, South America and every state in the United States. What he enjoyed most was his family. He was happiest surrounded by his wife, kids and grandchildren, whether at the beach, the boat or on the tennis courts. He will be missed dearly. Special thanks to his caregivers over the past few years. Bud was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 4, at 2 p.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk conducted by Father Daniel N. Klem. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 3, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Norfolk Chapel.
