Norfolk Landmark August 16, 1889

                           Death of Mr. F.S. Dashiell

The numerous friends of this well known gentleman and old resident of Norfolk 
will be deeply pained at the announcement of his death, which took place at the 
residence of his son, Mr. George V. Dashiell, Berkley, Va., at 5:45 p.m. 
yesterday after a lingering illness, in the 66th year of his age. The deceased 
was a native of Norfolk County, but took up his residence in this city at a very 
early age, where he has ever since resided. He was possessed of most amiable 
qualities of head and heart and was perhaps as widely known as anyone in the 
community for sterling integrity and uprightness of character. During the late 
War Between the States he was among the first to volunteer his services in 
defense of his native state and the South, enlisting as a private in the Norfolk 
Juniors, which was attached to the Twelfth Virginia Regiment, Mahone's Brigade 
and in which he served with credit to himself and to the cause. After the close 
of hostilities, he returned home and was for several years successfully engaged 
in the wholesale shipping and commission business. When the terrible yellow 
fever scourge visited the city of Memphis, Tenn., he, with others, went as a 
nurse to the sick and dying, rendering noble, self-sacrificing service. He 
leaves a widow and four children, two sons and two daughters, to mourn his loss, 
together with an extended circle of relatives and friends. His funeral will take 
place from the residence of his son at 4 p.m. today.

DASHIELL - At the residence of his son, George V. Dashiell, in Berkley, at 5:45 
p.m. Thursday, August 15th, 1889, FREDERICK S. DASHIELL, aged 65 years.
Funeral will take place THIS (Friday) AFTERNOON at 4 o'clock from above 
residence corner Mulberry and Middleton Streets. Friends of the family invited 
to attend.
