Davenport, for 15 years one of the pharmacists at the Virginia Pharmacy, Princess Anne road and Church street, died Monday night, April 11 at a local hospital. Because of ill health, he had not worked in the drug store since July, 1948. A native of this city, he was educated at the St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Norfolk Mission College and Howard University. Highest honors were awarded him when he completed the pharmaceutical school. Before employment with the Virginia Pharmacy, he had his own drug store on Princess Anne road opposite Courtney street, opened in 1916. After a few years in this business, he spent time in Asheville, NC. When Drs. J. Q. A. Webb, F. R. Trigg and R. J. Brown operated the drug store on Brambleton avenue (then Queen street) he was the pharmacist there. From early childhood he was a member of the Bank Street Baptist Church and was affiliated with the Norfolk Medical Association, the Orioles, the Bozoos Clubs. Among his survivors are two brothers, Harold S. and Eugene B., two sisters, Misses Althea M. and Louise V.; two nephews, one niece and one great niece. Final rites are scheduled for Friday, April 15, 1 p.m., at the Bank Street church with the Rev. J. B. Henderson officiating with the King’s Funeral Home conducting burial in the Calvary Cemetery.
