Norfolk - Death claimed one of the most fabulous figures of the Norfolk’s 
“Roaring40’s” period when Benjamin “Benny” Davis, former hotel owner, man-
about-town and intimate of celebrities died Monday night at his home, at 820 
Reservoir avenue here.

He was 62 years of age and had been in failing health for three months. 
Death came at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Davis was well-known in sport, entertainment, business, fraternal and 
social circles and - as owner-manager of the old Prince George hotel (now 
the Plaza) at Norfolk - was the friend, confidant and host to persons in 
these and other fields visiting Norfolk.

During the 22 years he headed the local hotel, Mr. Davis hosted most of the 
celebrities coming into town and gained national and international 
connections. He also promoted entertainment events. He left the hotel 
business in 1951 and until his recent illness was connected with a business 
enterprise at Newport News, VA.

A native of Danville, VA, and the son of the late Charles and Rachel Davis, 
Mr. Davis came to Norfolk at an early age and gained membership in various 
local groups and institutions. He was member of the Excelsior lodge No. 87 
AF and AM, the Eureka lodge and Alpha and Omega Consistary No. 9. He was 
also a member of the Bank Street Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held from the Bank Street church on Saturday 
afternoon, April 27, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. J. B. Henderson, pastor, 
officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery with Graves Funeral Home 
in charge of arrangements.

Included among the survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Rachel Flates; a sister, 
Mrs. Cornelia Oliver; two grand-nieces, Mesdames Gladys Holloway and 
Cornelia Paige; and a great-great nephew, Benjamin Brehon.
