The many friends of this gentleman will regret to hear of his death, which occurred yesterday morning at 1 o’clock at his late residence on Waverly street, after a long and painful illness. Mr. Davis was well known to our entire community. He was the son of Deacon Miles Davis of the Cumberland Street Baptist Church. Previous to the war, he was sailmaker in the United States Navy and on the withdrawal of Virginia from the Federal Union, he resigned his position and cast his lot with his native State, entering the Confederate Navy in a like capacity. Throughout the war, he remained faithful to the cause and, on the conclusion of hostilities, returned to Norfolk. For years he has occupied the position of corn measurer, giving entire satisfaction to the trade. His death will be lamented and, with our citizens, we extend to the afflicted family our sincere sympathies. His funeral will take place today from the Cumberland Street Baptist Church at 3 o’clock.
