She was born on July 15th, 1949 in Norfolk, Virginia to the late John Plentie Davis, Sr. and the late Velma Louise (Johnson) Davis of Norfolk Virginia. Mary Jane, affectionately called Jane, Aunt Janey, Janey - Poo, was a graduate of the 1967 Class of Booker T. Washington High School. She later attended Hampton University, formerly, Hampton Institute and Old Dominion University. Jane began her career as an Administrator for the Tidewater Public Schools system. She was later hired by C & P Telephone Company now AT&T Communications as an Account Manager where she received numerous awards for her exemplary and dedicated service for over 30 years including the AT&T Circle of Excellence award for two consecutive years. In 2000, Jane underwent a kidney transplant and has lived a high-quality life since that time. She was very grateful to God for her kidney longevity of 24 years and to her donor who happened to be a good friend and coworker. It is no wonder that Jane touched many lives with her compassionate heart, giving spirit, and sense of humor. Following her retirement from AT&T, Jane decided to volunteer at the Inova Fairfax Hospital, which due to her strong work ethic, commitment to excellence, and a deep caring spirit for others caused her to be recognized by the Transplant Center Director and staff resulting in a full-time position as a Transplant Center Coordinator for the patients and the hospital staff. She worked as the coordinator for approximately 10 years. Jane loved her family and was all about "Family First" after God. She would never miss a family celebration and always participated in her family reunions, graduations, weddings, etc. as well as her adopted family's reunion, the Martin family of Baltimore. Jane loved to travel. Her travels included traveling with her sister-in-law, Pat Davis to such places as Hawaii, Argentina, Las Vegas, the Bahamas, Virgin Islands, and the 1986 US Olympics (to name a few). Jane had an artistic flare and loved collecting antiques such as Aunt Jemima, Sarah's Attics figurines, and African-American art years. Her hobbies also included string art, ceramics, and wreath-making. She had a beautiful collection of door wreaths that she would lovingly give to her friends and family. Jane was a woman of Christian faith and had a deeply rooted love for God. She was a devoted member of the Oak Shade Baptist Church in Catlett, VA under the leadership of Reverend Jesse Jones, Jr. where she was a member for twenty-four years. As a child, she was baptized as a member of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church in Norfolk, VA. Jane is predeceased by her parents (previously mentioned) and siblings, John P. Davis, Jr. (Patricia) of Maryland, Milton E. Davis (Harriet-D), Isaac Davis (Catherine) of Virginia, Beulah Davis of Norfolk, VA. To cherish fond memories, she leaves behind her beloved sisters, Florence Davis Ferguson (Scott-D) of Chesapeake, VA and Alexina Davis Hairston of Suitland, MD, 9 nieces and 4 nephews, 24 great nieces and nephews, and 13 great-great nieces and nephews as well as a host of cousins, and many close friends.
