Her funeral was scheduled to be held at St. John’s AME Church where she had been an active member for approximately 50 years,Thursday afternoon with the pastor, the Rev. H. M. Shields officiating. In earlier years Mrs. Davis’ life was marked with exceptional activity in the church and the community. She was connected with a number of women’s fraternal organizations and was once known as one of the most outstanding characters in this field in Norfolk. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Harper, and widow of the late James Davis. Mrs. Davis graduated from the Cumberland street (now S. C. Armstrong) school, and Shaw University. It was just after she came out of college that she literally captivated Norfolk with her sweet voice. Public admiration of her singing and personality soared so high that she was affectionately called “the nightingale.” During that era Mrs. Davis sang to some of the most outstanding groups in the city, and at one time headed a successful chorus of singers, when patrons loved to refer to her as “the nightingale of the flock.” She was a member of the senior choir of St. John’s Church and a Sunday school teacher. For 40 years she served as grand lecturer of the Order of Eastern Star of Virginia. Interment was to take place in Calvary Cemetery with J. H. Hale Funeral Parlors officiating.
