Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Tuesday, January 4, 2000 
John L. Dawson , 58, of the 6400 block of Edward St., passed away in his 
residence early Dec. 30, 1999, after a long illness.



Mr. Dawson was born in Norfolk on Nov. 27, 1941. He served his country in the 
U.S. Air Force as a drill sergeant, and later retired in Norfolk. J.D. was self-
employed as an automotive detailer for 25 years in the local area. John also 
held the title of head maître d' at the Fifth National Bank in the late 1970s.



He is survived by his companion of 20 years, Penny Singer, and the mother of 
his children, Vicki Dawson; his children, Cassie Commodore and Alice June, both 
of Norfolk, Jessica Dawson of Virginia Beach and Derek Dawson and Tera Neu, 
both of Norfolk; and his granddaughter, Kayla Commodore.



John was a caring, generous and loving man. He did everything he could for 
anyone who needed help. He will be deeply missed.



Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Norview United Methodist 
Church, 1112 Norview Ave., Norfolk, followed by interment in Elmwood Cedar 
Grove Cemetery, Princess Anne Road, Norfolk.
