He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Louise Jones and his son, William Dawson Jr. of Miami. Mr. Dawson was born Jan. 19, 1919 in Norfolk. As a child, he attended Epworth Methodist Church and graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk. He was married in Norfolk in 1943 to Miss Jones, a Norfolk native and a graduate of Maury High School, and between 1944 and 1946 served in the U.S. Army as an MP and staff sergeant in Nuremberg, Germany. While serving in Europe, he published a newspaper for enlisted men. After World War II, he returned to Norfolk where he worked as a shipfitter at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and as a metalsmith at the Norfolk Naval Air Station for a total of 36 years. After his retirement from the government in 1976, he and his wife moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and later to Port Charlotte where he was employed for nine years at St. Joseph's Hospital. His son and only offspring, William Jr., who is also a graduate of Maury High, is a professor and presently head of the music department at Miami Dade Community College. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Cemetery, Norfolk.
