Miriam Burke Dean, 98, who resided at Westminster Canterbury in Virginia Beach, 
died there on Aug. 5, 2003. Mrs. Dean was the widow of Philip Dale Dean, former 
president of Dixie Veneer Company in Portsmouth, who died in 1952. Born in 
Norfolk, she was the daughter of John Burke, formerly a partner in the Burke and 
Gregory printing firm, and Mary Callan Burke.

Mrs. Dean graduated from Mount de Sales Academy, Catonsville, Md., in 1923 and 
married Mr. Dean in 1929. In her earlier years, she was a member of the Junior 
League. She was a contributor over the years to the Children's Hospital of The 
King's Daughters, to Catholic Charities in Norfolk, and to Mount de Sales Academy. 
In the 1950s, she did volunteer work for the annual community charitable campaigns 
in Norfolk, known then as the Community Chest. Through her life she had been a 
member of several Catholic parishes, including St. Mary's and Blessed Sacrament 
Catholic churches of Norfolk and the Church of the Holy Family in Virginia Beach.

She is survived by her son, Philip Dale Dean Jr., of Arlington, Va.; and two 
grandchildren, Catherine Patricia Dean, of Chicago, Ill., and Philip Christopher 
Dean, of Charleston, S.C.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at the Church of 
the Holy Family, Virginia Beach, by Father Thomas Quinlan. Burial will follow at 
St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be 
made to Mount de Sales Academy, 700 Academy Road, Catonsville, MD 21228 and/or to 
the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.
